Arsenal will take immense confidence from their stunning 7-1 victory over PSV Eindhoven in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 clash, and manager Mikel Arteta is keen to maintain that momentum.
On Tuesday, Arsenal achieved their largest away win in European competition, placing themselves in a commanding position to progress to the quarter-finals, where they’ll face either Atletico Madrid or Real Madrid.
The North London outfit had struggled to find the back of the net in their previous two league outings and arrived in Eindhoven with their Premier League title ambitions hanging by a thread, trailing leaders Liverpool by 13 points.
“It brings us a lot of joy, confidence, and belief; however, in football, it’s not about what we did three days ago or even today; it’s about what we will do tomorrow, especially at Old Trafford, and how we perform to secure another win,” Arteta conveyed to the press.
“Let’s relish tonight’s success as it was an incredible performance and an outstanding scoreline. We deserve this, and now we need to build on it and continue improving as a team.”
“This achievement, being our biggest away victory in the Champions League, is something special, but as a team, we aspire to reach greater heights that are far more significant than this.”
Arteta expressed his support for Ethan Nwaneri, who once again delivered an impressive performance, notching up Arsenal’s second goal at just 17 years of age.
“He certainly doesn’t require any extra motivation! Every time he has the ball, it’s clear what his intentions are. If he comes into the game, great! I was really impressed with how he conducted himself and his performance tonight,” Arteta remarked.
Arsenal will next face 14th-placed Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.
