Stefano Utoikamanu has issued a challenge to his club mate Cameron Munster, encouraging the Maroons to send the ball directly to him next week in Perth.
The talented front-rower has earned a spot back in the NSW Blues squad after a two-year absence and will make his return from the bench in the second game against Queensland.
Utoikamanu has thrived following his move to the Melbourne Storm this season, and it comes as no shock that the former Wests Tigers player is flourishing in Craig Bellamy’s setup.
The 25-year-old will be part of a formidable front-row rotation alongside Payne Haas, Max King, and Spencer Leniu, with Leniu expected to deliver his signature intensity when he comes off the bench.
In an interview with 9News on the first day of training camp, Utoikamanu confessed that he felt unprepared mentally for his State of Origin debut in 2023, but insists this time will be different.

“I feel like I’m much clearer about my responsibilities now, especially coming off the bench,” he explained.
“In my debut, I came off the bench but didn’t have much game time. This environment is full of top-tier players, and when you’re subbed in, making an impact is crucial.
“I found myself feeling quite anxious and was mentally playing the game before I even hit the field. That can throw you off your game and leave you feeling a bit fatigued. This time, my focus will be on keeping it simple and understanding my role.

“I was probably too caught up in my thoughts last time.
“At the Melbourne Storm, the pressure is constant, which pushes you to improve. My time in Melbourne has definitely elevated my game.”
While Utoikamanu will be the sole Storm representative in the Blues team, he’ll face some familiar rivals across the field.
Harry Grant, Trent Loiero, and Xavier Coates have all secured starting spots for Queensland, but Utoikamanu has his sights set on one player in particular.

“If they kick off, I want them to send it my way … I’m eager to run straight at Munster,” said the reserved Storm prop.
“Getting my first carry will help me get into the match. It definitely gives me a bit of fire when someone’s trying to charge at me and make a hit.
“You have to remind yourself that these blokes are out to take you down, so it’s crucial to unleash first – that’s the mindset I’m bringing.”
Munster has been appointed captain of the Maroons following the replacement of Daly Cherry-Evans.
