Two-time Olympic diving medallist Melissa Wu has officially declared her retirement from competitive diving.
The 32-year-old, who had anticipated that the Paris 2024 Games would be her final Olympic appearance, made her retirement known on Wednesday at the New South Wales Institute of Sport.
Wu made history by becoming the first Australian diver to participate in five Olympic Games, finishing 11th in the 10m platform at Paris.
At just 16 years old, the Penrith local became the youngest Australian diver to win an Olympic medal when she took home silver in the synchronised 10m platform alongside Briony Cole at the Beijing 2008 Games.
She also secured a bronze medal in the 10m platform at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
“When I started at 13, I could never have imagined my career extending this far,” Wu reflected.

“I’m incredibly fortunate to have had such an extensive career. Despite facing numerous injuries, participating in five consecutive Olympics is a remarkable achievement,” she added.
“As I retire, I feel satisfied that I’ve truly given my all. It feels like a perfect time to step away.”
In addition to her Olympic successes, Wu also clinched five medals at the Commonwealth Games, featuring three golds and two silvers.
At the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, she had the honour of carrying the Australian flag after winning gold in the synchronised 10m platform event with Charli Petrov.
“I take immense pride in everything I’ve accomplished,” Wu stated.
“As an athlete, I hope my journey inspires not just future divers, but all athletes. I aim to demonstrate that longevity in sports is possible and that age is just a number. I’ve always wanted to give back, and that passion remains strong.”

Matthew Mitcham, the Australian diving legend who clinched gold at Beijing 2008, praised Wu as a “champion,” “exceptional diver,” and “unparalleled talent from the start.”
“I admire Melissa greatly,” Mitcham acknowledged.
“Her retirement is well-earned, and I truly hope she enjoys this next chapter. I am incredibly proud of her.”
Wu’s coach, Chava Sobrino, also emphasised her vital role in mentoring younger talent, including rising star Ellie Cole, who is just 18.
“It feels very different without Mel in the pool,” Sobrino commented.
“Her presence on the team was akin to having an additional coach. The impact she’s had on younger divers is beyond measure. She was generous in sharing her experiences and lessons.”
