The Rabbitohs have been struck by a devastating injury to Cameron Murray just before the NRL season begins—a setback that has sent ripples through the team. Yet, there may be a “silver lining” for the skipper amidst the disappointment.
This week, the 27-year-old suffered a ruptured Achilles, a significant blow not only to South Sydney but also to the NSW Blues.
Murray is regarded as one of the premier forwards in the game and has been the heartbeat of Redfern since he made his much-anticipated debut as a young prospect in 2017.
However, his recent years have seen him contend with various injury issues.
From shoulder injuries to a recent wrist problem sustained while representing the Kangaroos, the resilient No.13 has faced numerous challenges.

According to former State of Origin powerhouse Willie Mason, this extended absence could ultimately benefit Murray’s career in the long run.
“He’s a really likeable character and a fantastic player at every level,” Mason shared on his podcast, Levels.
“I reckon there’s always a silver lining; he’s had an extensive amount of football over the last five or six years, competing at the top level with Origin campaigns and deep runs into the finals.
“He plays substantial minutes, and at times, your body just says, ‘I need a break.’
“If he spends a year off from the game, that can sometimes extend your career for the better. If he misses the whole of 2025, he can focus on rehab and addressing all of his other injuries, coming back next year feeling refreshed.
“Not getting clobbered for an entire year will be beneficial—the physicality of the game is tough, particularly for a smaller player who often gives away 10 to 20 kilos in the middle, yet he never backs down.”
“In about four weeks, he’ll start processing this; he’s a forward-thinker and an intelligent bloke, and he’ll likely focus on getting his body in top shape for a stronger comeback.”
Since his debut, Murray has played 161 matches for the Bunnies, solidifying his place in the squad as well as at the Origin and international levels.
His recent wrist injury, which had already put his availability for round one in doubt before the Achilles setback, has been a source of frustration for the captain.
“I see him around quite often … he’s too tough for his own good, he pushes through and ends up having issues,” noted former NRL player Justin Horo.
“This situation gives him a chance to properly rehabilitate.”
Murray’s potential absence for the entire season coincides with Latrell Mitchell facing a spell on the sidelines due to a hamstring injury.
The star fullback has undergone scans and is expected to be out for the next two months.
Both players will create significant gaps in the South Sydney lineup, with younger talents like Jye Gray and Tallis Duncan now anticipated to rise to the occasion.
