Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham Forest informed new England manager Thomas Tuchel that he believed he warranted a spot in the German’s initial squad after being called up at the last minute.
The surprise exclusion of Forest’s captain from Tuchel’s squad announcement on Friday raised eyebrows, particularly considering his crucial contributions that led Nuno Espirito Santo’s team to third place in the Premier League.
However, Gibbs-White received some good news on Sunday as an injury to Cole Palmer opened up a spot for him in the squad.
“Naturally, I was a bit upset. Yeah, I felt a bit disappointed,” Gibbs-White expressed to the BBC.
“I conveyed to him that I felt I had done enough to merit the call-up, given our form, but at the end of the day, you’re the manager, and I fully respect your decisions.”
“So, it was disappointing initially, but then on Sunday, I received the call, and I was eager to come straight away.”
This will be Gibbs-White’s third cap for the Three Lions, having previously made two appearances under caretaker manager Lee Carsley.
Nevertheless, he will face fierce competition for a regular spot in Tuchel’s starting XI, with players like Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, and Palmer also vying for places.
“The calibre of players is exceptionally high,” Gibbs-White remarked.
“He (Tuchel) called me to ask, ‘Are you still upset with me, or would you like to join us and train tomorrow?’
“There was no hesitation; I replied that I would love to come and train with the lads, so I found out on Sunday late afternoon and I couldn’t stop smiling.”
Tuchel’s tenure kicks off with a World Cup qualifier against Albania on Friday, followed by a match against Latvia at Wembley on March 24.
Despite his earlier omission, Gibbs-White has commended Tuchel for his proactive approach in engaging with the players before their first meeting at England’s St. George’s Park training facility this week.
“I think it was crucial for him to establish a bond right from the get-go, considering he’s more accustomed to club football where he interacts daily with players,” Gibbs-White noted.
“I think it was fantastic that he initiated that relationship even before we met, which is really commendable.”
