As he gears up for a couple of international friendlies shortly, Sweden forward Alexander Isak has expressed that his focus is entirely on finishing the season with Newcastle United, rather than contemplating his future.
Isak has attracted interest from several big clubs including Arsenal, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain in recent months, with reports suggesting that Newcastle might demand around £150 million to let him go.
Though Isak has three years remaining on his current contract, there are indications that the Magpies are considering offering him a new deal to persuade the 25-year-old to remain at St James’ Park.
However, in remarks to Swedish agency TT, Isak indicated that there haven’t been any definitive discussions from either Newcastle or the clubs linked with him.
“To be honest, I don’t know much. There are no negotiations happening. It’s the same with Newcastle; no one is discussing a contract extension,” he stated.
Isak emerged as one of Newcastle’s key players over the weekend, netting the decisive goal in the EFL Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley, leading the club to its first domestic trophy in 70 years.
Nonetheless, Isak believes there is still much left to accomplish this season, as Newcastle continues its pursuit of the FA Cup and a spot in the UEFA Champions League.
“The season isn’t over yet. We have nine matches remaining. We’ve had a really strong season thus far, but I have greater ambitions and want to finish on a high,” he remarked.
Whether finishing this season equates to concluding his time in the northeast of England remains uncertain, but Newcastle supporters will be cautious about Isak’s belief that he has achieved most of his goals there.
“My dream when I arrived was for us to progress as a club, win titles, and reach the Champions League. We’ve accomplished most of that,” he commented.
Before resuming Premier League action with Newcastle against Brentford on April 2, Isak will represent Sweden in their upcoming friendly matches.
The team travels to Luxembourg tomorrow, followed by a home fixture against Northern Ireland on Tuesday.
