The 33-year-old began experiencing symptoms on Thursday, which led to his immediate removal from team duties. Subsequent medical tests confirmed the viral infection, the Brazilian Serie A club revealed on Saturday.
Santos has not specified how long Neymar will be unavailable and did not respond promptly to a request for comment from Reuters. Additionally, Neymar has already been ruled out of Thursday’s league match against Fortaleza due to suspension.
The upcoming match against Fortaleza will mark Santos’ final game before the Brazilian league breaks from June 14 to July 13 for the Club World Cup, which is taking place in the United States.
Neymar’s future at Santos remains uncertain, with his contract due to end on June 30. Struggling with injuries, he has participated in 12 matches for Santos across all competitions this season, scoring three goals and providing three assists.
