On Saturday, the streets of Newcastle were awash with black and white as 150,000 supporters gathered for an open-top bus parade to commemorate the Magpies’ triumph in the League Cup.
Newcastle clinched their first major trophy since 1969 with a 2-1 defeat of Liverpool on March 16th, marking their first domestic cup win in 70 years.
Despite years without significant silverware, the club boasts one of the most devoted fanbases in English football.
“This is simply incredible, absolutely mind-blowing,” exclaimed manager Eddie Howe, whose image was prominently displayed on a massive banner outside St. James’ Park.
“You’ve got fans hanging from lampposts and peering from windows; I just hope everyone is safe.”
“The people have been absolutely amazing. I can’t express my gratitude enough for how they have welcomed me and my family, and I’m thrilled to have brought them some joy.”
The parade kicked off at St. James’ Park, weaving through the city centre and culminating at Town Moor, where players and notable figures from Newcastle’s storied past were celebrated on stage.
“I promised I would celebrate like no one else, and I think I’ve managed that,” said club legend and former England captain Alan Shearer.
“Right now, I’m not sure where I am or what day it is! The last fortnight has been possibly the best of my life.”
Notable goals at Wembley from local favourite Dan Burn and star striker Alexander Isak have become part of Newcastle folklore.
Following the final, Burn made his England debut just days later at the age of 32, reflecting on how the scenes encapsulated what ending a lengthy quest for silverware means to Tyneside.
“It’s an experience I’ll forever cherish,” Burn shared with the BBC. “The sheer volume of supporters was staggering. It truly underscores the significance of this achievement for the city.”
“To be present in that moment, even if it lasted just an hour, is something I’ll never forget.”

The day’s celebrations were capped off with a spectacular drone show organised by club sponsors Sela, a Saudi entertainment and hospitality firm.
Since their acquisition by the Saudi sovereign wealth fund in 2021, Newcastle’s fortunes on the pitch have seen a notable revival.
The Magpies made a return to the Champions League last season after a 20-year absence.
With their current standing of sixth in the Premier League, they have the potential to ascend to fourth place should they secure victory in their match against Crystal Palace.
