Kevin De Bruyne has officially joined Napoli on a free transfer, following his release from Manchester City, as confirmed by the club’s president, Aurelio De Laurentiis, on Thursday.
De Laurentiis shared a photograph of himself shaking hands with De Bruyne on social media, captioned: ‘Welcome Kevin!’
The Belgian midfielder has reportedly inked a two-year contract with an option for a third season at Napoli, where he will link up with international colleague Romelu Lukaku and former Manchester United player Scott McTominay.
The 33-year-old departed City after an illustrious decade in Manchester, during which he won six Premier League titles and secured the Champions League trophy in 2023 under the management of Pep Guardiola.
However, De Bruyne has faced a number of injury setbacks in recent years, with two hamstring injuries sidelining him for considerable periods during the last couple of seasons.
By signing one of Europe’s premier midfielders, Napoli aims to strengthen their squad as they prepare to defend their Scudetto title while also navigating the added challenge of an expanded Champions League fixture schedule next season.
Antonio Conte’s Napoli clinched the Serie A title on the last day of the season, marking their second league victory in three years.
In contrast to Inter Milan, who reached the Champions League final only to suffer a heavy 5-0 defeat against Paris Saint-Germain, Napoli enjoyed a season free from European competition.
