Following the announcement of Paul Simonis’ transfer to Wolfsburg, Go Ahead Eagles unveiled Melvin Boel as their new head coach on Thursday. The former FC Dordrecht manager is stepping into the role at the Adelaarshorst.
The 38-year-old Boel has inked a three-year deal, taking over from the successful Paul Simonis, who led the club to its first major trophy in 92 years by clinching victory over AZ in the KNVB Beker final back in April.
Boel joins the Eagles after a stint at Eerste Divisie club FC Dordrecht, where he reached the semi-finals of last season’s promotion play-offs in his inaugural season at the helm. He made the move to Dordrecht in summer 2024 from Feyenoord, where he had previously managed the U21 squad.
Having completed an internship under head coach Rene Hake in the 2023-24 season, Boel is returning to Deventer. “When Go Ahead Eagles reached out earlier this week regarding the head coach position, I knew straight away that I wanted to take it,” Boel stated on the club’s website.
“I have always perceived Go Ahead Eagles as a welcoming club. The discussions with the board instilled a great deal of confidence in me.”
Boel comes into a Go Ahead Eagles team that finished seventh in the Dutch Eredivisie, securing a spot in next season’s UEFA Europa League’s League Phase.
Mark van Hintum, the incoming technical director, lauded Boel’s creativity and insight. “It’s fantastic that we were able to find a new coach so promptly. With Melvin, we are acquiring a young and ambitious trainer. At FC Dordrecht, Melvin showcased a clear footballing vision despite facing resource limitations.”
