Manchester United has officially secured the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers, as announced by the club on Thursday. The Brazilian forward has committed to the club on a five-year deal.
United activated Cunha’s release clause, reported to be approximately £62.5 million, according to club sources. Additionally, the Old Trafford outfit has the option to extend his contract for an extra year.
“It’s difficult to express how I feel about becoming a Manchester United player,” Cunha expressed.
“Since I was a young boy in Brazil, watching Premier League matches at my grandmother’s house, United has always been my favourite English team. I have dreamt of donning the red shirt.”
“I am eager to start pre-season, meet my new teammates, and get ready for the upcoming season. My focus is wholly on working diligently to become a valuable asset for the team and assist in restoring this club to its former glory.”
The 26-year-old striker scored 33 goals and provided 15 assists in 92 matches for Wolves, including 15 goals during last season’s Premier League.
Cunha played a pivotal role in helping Brazil secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by setting up the lone goal in a crucial 1-0 victory against Paraguay on Tuesday.
This dynamic playmaker was instrumental when he assisted Vinicius Junior’s goal, leading to Brazil’s decisive win over Paraguay.
“Signing Matheus was one of our top priorities this summer, so we’re thrilled to have completed his transfer so early in the window,” said Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football.
“He has demonstrated his talent in the Premier League as one of the most exciting and effective forwards during his time at Wolves.”
“He possesses all the attributes we need as we aim to create a strong, dynamic, and entertaining team capable of competing for the biggest trophies.”
Last season, United finished 15th in the Premier League, accumulating 42 points.
This transfer marks a record deal for Wolves, surpassing the £53 million they received from Manchester City for midfielder Matheus Nunes in 2023.
