If Matthew Lloyd were in charge of an AFL club, he’d think twice before pursuing Jamarra Ugle-Hagan during the upcoming trade period. He believes it’s essential for Ugle-Hagan to return to the Western Bulldogs and showcase his skills on the field in 2025 before any club considers making a move.
Since April, Ugle-Hagan has been away from the club, having sought treatment at a health retreat. Nonetheless, it seems he’s back in training mode based on his recent Instagram updates.
The gifted key forward hasn’t participated in any matches for the Bulldogs this season and has struggled to keep up with regular training alongside his teammates.
However, Tom Morris, Nine’s chief AFL reporter, reports that Ugle-Hagan has indicated he would prefer to play for Sydney next year.

Lloyd expressed concerns about whether the Swans, or any club, could place their trust in the 23-year-old right now.
“It would be ideal for him to return this year and commit to hard training with the Western Bulldogs,” Lloyd remarked during an interview with Nine’s Today.
“He may not remain with them next year, but he hasn’t been able to sustain more than a few weeks of consistent training this season.”
“If I were the Swans, or any club looking at him, I wouldn’t have any confidence in trading for him without seeing evidence of his commitment.”
“Until he gets some game time, even in the VFL, I don’t think it’s sensible to consider a trade next year.”
“He possesses immense talent, so it’s likely that a club might take a chance on him. It would be great to see him contribute meaningfully to the Western Bulldogs.”

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge speaks to media. Western Bulldogs
When approached about the trade talks, Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge chose to remain tight-lipped.
“We take any speculation regarding any player with a pinch of salt; he remains our player,” Beveridge stated to reporters.
“We’re committed to doing what’s right for him and supporting him. I have no doubts he’ll still be here next year.”
“Let’s hope he can get more aspects of his life in order so he can return to training and playing – though when that may happen is hard to say.”
