Argentina has adapted to the absence of Lionel Messi, no longer needing to alter their lineup when the Inter Miami striker is unavailable, according to manager Lionel Scaloni ahead of Wednesday’s World Cup qualifying match against Colombia.
Since his senior debut in 2005, Messi has netted 112 goals in 192 appearances for Argentina, claiming the World Cup title in 2022, along with two Copa America trophies and a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The 37-year-old captain was sidelined during Argentina’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay and the 4-1 rout of Brazil in March due to injury, while Scaloni’s team secured their spot in the 2026 World Cup during that international window.
He has since returned to the squad for this month’s qualifiers, making a substitute appearance in Argentina’s 1-0 win against Chile last week.
“The team has reached a point where it can operate effectively with or without Leo (Messi), which was a challenge in the past as we were required to make significant player adjustments,” Scaloni remarked to reporters in Buenos Aires before the match.
“Now, there isn’t that need, and the team functions consistently, which is a positive development.”
While Argentina has already secured qualification for the World Cup in North America, Colombia currently occupies the sixth and final automatic qualification spot, looking to extend their lead over seventh-placed Venezuela with a win.
Colombia triumphed over Argentina 2-1 in their last encounter during World Cup qualifiers in September.
“It’s a robust team with exceptional players and a clear style that can pose significant challenges,” Scaloni acknowledged.
“We’ve analysed their strengths, provided guidance to the players on how to exploit them, and anticipate an exciting match, especially since we’ll be playing at home for our supporters to witness.”
