Argentina have adapted to life without Lionel Messi and no longer require significant changes to their lineup when the Inter Miami star is unavailable, according to manager Lionel Scaloni ahead of Wednesday’s World Cup qualifier against Colombia.
Since debuting for the national team in 2005, Messi has netted 112 goals in 192 matches for Argentina, clinching the World Cup in 2022, two Copa America titles, and a gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
The 37-year-old skipper was absent during Argentina’s narrow 1-0 victory over Uruguay and a commanding 4-1 win against arch-rivals Brazil in March due to injury, although Scaloni’s squad secured their position at the 2026 World Cup during that international window.
He returned to the fold for the current month’s World Cup qualifiers, coming off the bench in Argentina’s 1-0 triumph over Chile last week.
“The team is currently at a stage where it can perform equally well with or without Leo (Messi), which was more challenging in the past when we had to alter several players,” Scaloni informed the media prior to the match in Buenos Aires.
“Now, we no longer see this necessity, and the team operates consistently, which is encouraging.”
While Argentina have already booked their spot for the World Cup in North America, Colombia sits in the sixth and final automatic qualification position and will aim to extend their lead over seventh-placed Venezuela with a victory.
Colombia triumphed over Argentina 2-1 in their previous World Cup qualifying encounter in September.
“They’re a formidable side, boasting excellent players and a distinct style that can pose challenges,” Scaloni remarked.
“We’ve conducted thorough analysis, highlighting their strengths and aspects we wish to exploit. It promises to be an exciting match, especially as we play at home, allowing our fans to enjoy the players on display.”
