Italy’s midfielder Jorginho has signed with Brazilian club Flamengo ahead of this month’s Club World Cup, following a mutual agreement to terminate his contract with Arsenal, as confirmed by both clubs.
The 33-year-old, whose deal with Arsenal was set to expire at the end of this month, has committed to Flamengo with a contract lasting until July 2028.
Jorginho, a Brazil-born Italy international, made the move to North London from Chelsea in January 2023, and during his time at Arsenal, he featured in 78 matches across all competitions.
Arsenal concluded the recent Premier League season in second place, trailing behind champions Liverpool.
“We can confirm that we have mutually agreed with Jorginho to end his contract, making him a free agent with immediate effect,” Arsenal stated in an announcement on Friday evening.
Beginning his football journey at Hellas Verona, Jorginho transitioned to Napoli in 2014, later achieving significant success at Chelsea, where he clinched the Champions League, Europa League, Super Cup, and Club World Cup.
Capped 57 times for Italy, he was part of the squad that lifted the European Championship in 2020.
“Jorginho’s first match with Flamengo will be at the Club World Cup,” announced the Brazilian Serie A side.
Flamengo is set to kick off their Club World Cup journey against Tunisian club ES Tunis on June 16 in Philadelphia.
The expanded 32-team Club World Cup will take place from June 14 to July 13 in the United States, with a staggering $1 billion in prize money on offer.
