The wait has finally concluded after nearly a year since Tony Gustavsson departed in the wake of the Matildas’ underwhelming performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The esteemed 55-year-old has decided to part ways with French club Lyon, despite having a year remaining on his contract, to accept a three-year position with Football Australia, which will extend through to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Born in Melbourne, Montemurro has devoted over a decade to women’s football management, leading Melbourne City to an impressive A-League Women premiership and championship double in the 2015/16 season. He then enjoyed a fruitful seven-year stint in Europe, securing league titles with Juventus, Arsenal, and his current club, Lyon.
Montemurro’s inaugural significant challenge as Matildas head coach will be the 2026 Asian Women’s Cup, scheduled for March in Sydney, Perth, and the Gold Coast, where Australia is regarded as a leading contender for the title.
“This team holds immense significance for countless Australians, and I’m honoured by the opportunity to help craft its next chapter,” Montemurro expressed during a press conference in Sydney on Monday morning.
“I’ve closely followed their remarkable journey and am invigorated by the passion, resilience, and identity they’ve cultivated.
“My objective is to honour the legacy, build upon the momentum, and help this team play a style of football that inspires and unites the nation.“
Throughout his managerial career, which has seen him lift numerous prestigious trophies across Australia, the UK, and Europe, Montemurro has received widespread acclaim from some of his most successful players for his approach, including Arsenal and England icon Beth Mead MBE. In her autobiography, she described him as “so laid-back he’s almost horizontal … From day one, Joe exuded a warmth and is incredibly personable.
“His tactical acumen is exceptional, and he is clear about his objectives. He is a possession-oriented manager who prioritises control and ball dominance, yet most importantly, he values fluidity.
“He fostered an aura around us, and every aspect of our play felt fluid and enjoyable… I felt as though I could play with my eyes closed.“
