Jamie Vardy is confident that Leicester City will thrive without him, expressing his enduring fondness for the club as he bid farewell to the Foxes following 13 years on Sunday.
The 38-year-old celebrated his final appearance for Leicester by scoring his 200th goal while helping secure a 2-0 victory against fellow relegated side Ipswich Town at the King Power Stadium in the Premier League.
After joining from fifth-tier Fleetwood Town for a million pounds ($1.33 million) in 2012, Vardy emerged as the club’s most iconic player in modern history, famously leading Leicester to an improbable Premier League title in the 2015-16 season.
“They’ll manage just fine. We have a strong squad and plenty of promising young talent coming through. Honestly, I’m relieved I’m not in their shoes! Football can be mentally tough, and I couldn’t face it all over again,” Vardy stated when asked about Leicester’s future without him.
“I’ll always keep a close watch on the club I cherish. They will forever be in my heart.”
During the match, Vardy was honoured with a guard of honour from his teammates and a heartfelt standing ovation from the home fans as he left the pitch in the 80th minute.
“From the bottom of my heart, thank you for embracing my family and me as your own. I hope I’ve shown my gratitude,” Vardy expressed to the supporters.
Leicester’s manager Ruud van Nistelrooy also shared some kind words about the former England striker.
“To score your 200th goal on your 500th appearance is an incredible achievement. Vardy has been an extraordinary player and individual for this football club,” Van Nistelrooy remarked during a Premier League productions interview.
“In the years ahead, we will reflect on how part of history we were. He’s a character with a unique story and is a fantastic captain.”
Leicester’s next match is against Bournemouth, currently sitting in 11th place, next Sunday. However, Vardy will not participate, as it’s been confirmed that his last game was the home fixture against Ipswich.
