Canterbury Bulldogs hooker Reed Mahoney has addressed the recent backlash he faced, insisting that the accusations of being a ‘grub’ are not on his mind when he takes to the pitch.
The 26-year-old found himself under scrutiny during round four after a controversial tackle on Cronulla’s Daniel Atkinson, but ultimately avoided suspension for the incident.
Following the tackle, Mahoney received a wave of criticism from former players, fans, and the media, but he managed to put some of those doubters to rest with a standout performance in Canterbury’s victory against Newcastle on Sunday.
In a press conference on Tuesday morning, the feisty dummy-half admitted he was determined to let his on-field performance do the talking for the unbeaten Bulldogs.

“There was a lot of talk about that last week,” Mahoney acknowledged.
“What really drove me was the need to perform well this past weekend and secure a win for our team.
“I’ve had discussions with the coach, and I’m committed to maintaining my passion and love for the game. Once I’m on the field, winning is my top priority.
“Looking back, I know I could have approached that tackle on Atkinson differently. I’ve been focusing on my discipline this year, but I could have managed that situation better.
“That’s just how I approach my training and gameplay – I always push for high line speed and aim to energise those around the ruck. I’m prepared to do whatever it takes to win games.”

Mahoney is regarded as one of the top No.9s in the game and has long been in contention for Queensland State of Origin selection, dating back to his time at Parramatta.
Yet, the ongoing criticism and ‘grub’ label has persisted, with many suggesting it could hinder his chances for representative honours.

When asked how he manages the unwanted label, Mahoney shared that he focuses on the opinions of those closest to him.
“To be honest, it doesn’t really affect me,” he stated.
“I’m at ease with the people in my life – my family, friends, coach, and teammates. If others wish to voice their opinions, that’s up to them, but I’m content with who I am, and it doesn’t really bother me.
“Everyone is entitled to their views, but inside this circle, they don’t share that sentiment.”
Mahoney’s aggressive play style has benefitted the Bulldogs, who remain undefeated after five rounds as they head into a bye week.
He believes his intense approach lifts the performance of his teammates.

“This game is played at an intense pace, and I’m the most passionate player on the team, willing to do whatever it takes to secure a victory,” Mahoney asserted.
“There have been instances where I’ve crossed the line, and it’s something I’m continually working to improve, but it’s never personal against anyone.
“I’m diligently focusing on my discipline because I’m devoted to this team. When you go out there, you need to play hard football and embody passion; otherwise, you risk injury. It is the most physical sport, and I am not the largest player on the field.
“I genuinely invest my heart and soul into this game, and that’s the essence of my style.”
