LeBron James was eager to participate in yet another All-Star Game, but ongoing injury struggles have thwarted his 20-year streak in the NBA’s marquee event.
Just 90 minutes before the competition commenced on Monday (AEDT), the league’s all-time scoring champion revealed that he would be unable to play, citing persistent injury concerns.
This season, James has frequently appeared on the injury report for the Los Angeles Lakers due to ongoing foot and ankle issues that have plagued him for years.
For the first time since 2004, the All-Star Game took place without him.

“It’s frustrating,” said James.
“I was hoping for a much better outcome this morning, but unfortunately, it’s not where I need it to be.
“With 30 games remaining and our focus on making a playoff push in this highly competitive Western Conference, it’s crucial for me to take care of my health.
“I wouldn’t exactly call it maintenance, but that’s what it is. I need to be cautious regarding this injury that’s been of concern for several years.”
Initially slated to play for Shaquille O’Neal’s team, the OGs, in this year’s newly formatted All-Star mini-tournament, James’ absence is notable.
This would have marked his 21st consecutive All-Star appearance, extending his record since he first played in the event in 2005.

As a result of his absence, James was not replaced on the All-Star roster, leaving his team with seven players: Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Kevin Durant, Damian Lillard, and James Harden.
Looking ahead, James confirmed he plans to return to Los Angeles to continue his rehabilitation.
“There will be no rest for me,” he stated.
“I hope to be ready for Wednesday (Thursday AEDT).”
