Adelaide United’s returning star, Craig Goodwin, is now entirely committed to securing a place in the Socceroos lineup for next year’s FIFA World Cup, following their qualification announcement on Wednesday morning.
After clinching a 1-0 victory against Japan in Perth last week, the Socceroos continued their impressive form with a 2-1 away win over Saudi Arabia, ensuring their participation in the prestigious tournament set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico next year.
A regular in the Socceroos squad, Goodwin would have been present for both matches but was sidelined due to a nerve issue in his foot, which now requires surgical intervention.
“Naturally, it’s quite disappointing not to be on the pitch or involved, especially while watching the game,” Goodwin shared with the media on Wednesday afternoon.
“However, as a football enthusiast and proud Australian, I wanted the team to succeed and reach the World Cup. My mental focus is now set on the 2026 World Cup and securing my place there.”

When questioned if his injury would affect his pre-season ahead of what will be his fourth tenure with the Reds, Goodwin reassured fans that his foot condition is manageable.
“I’ve got a neuroma, which is an inflamed nerve in my left foot that I’ve been dealing with over the past three to four years. Unfortunately, the cortisone injections aren’t effective anymore, so I need to have the lump removed. The recovery period will be around six weeks.”
Returning to Adelaide after a two-year stint in Saudi Arabia, the 33-year-old Goodwin left the club at the end of the 2022-23 Isuzu UTE A-League season to join Al Wehda in the Saudi Pro League.
Having signed a three-year contract with the Reds, Goodwin is optimistic about showcasing his skills to earn further opportunities under head coach Tony Popovic, with the 2026 FIFA World Cup in mind.
“I didn’t have a lot of discussions with him about returning to the Isuzu UTE A-League,” Goodwin noted when asked about Popovic’s input.
“However, he has been very clear with all players: it’s about regular playing time and performing at your best. He’s demonstrated that by selecting numerous A-League players, showing it doesn’t matter if you’re playing here or overseas.”
He added, “Previously, I made the last World Cup squad while playing for Adelaide and had a phenomenal tournament. A significant portion of my best form has been with Adelaide United.”
“I’m looking forward to this challenge and the mental focus it entails. I know that international opportunities only come when you’re excelling at the club level.”
Goodwin remarked, “There were always alternative options, including the chance to stay in Saudi Arabia. At 33, I don’t see myself retiring anytime soon, but I want to ensure I’m in a place that ignites my passion, as I believe this will enhance my performance.”
“My time in Saudi Arabia was fantastic, and I enjoyed competing against some of the world’s best players. I had two outstanding seasons there, which led to consistent national team call-ups.”

“Looking ahead, it’s crucial for me to be in an environment that fuels my passion, as that will help me reach my potential.”
Goodwin becomes the first signing for new Adelaide United head coach Airton Andrioli, who was recently appointed on a two-year contract following the exit of Carl Veart.
“I’m genuinely excited to join the team and to work with Airton, whom I’ve known for several years since he coached me when I was about 13 or 14,” Goodwin said.
“He has done an excellent job with the youth team and is familiar with many of the players. This marks an exciting new chapter, and I’m eager to help elevate the performance of the younger players while focusing on my mentality.”

One teammate Goodwin is particularly keen to partner with is fellow player Archie Goodwin, who had an impressive debut season with the Reds, netting 13 goals and sharing the Golden Boot with Sydney FC’s Adrian Segecic.
“We’ll have to see how we handle that! I might joke with him that he needs an ‘A’ next to his name,” Goodwin quipped when asked how the two players could share the jersey next season.
“But genuinely, I’m really looking forward to partnering with Archie and hopefully assisting him to secure more goals this season and help him become the outright Golden Boot winner.”
