HJK’s A and B Teams Advance to Suomen Cup Quarter-Finals Following Nail-Biting Defeat of Mariehamn

Klubi 04, the reserve squad of the esteemed HJK Helsinki, has made headlines by securing a place in the Quarter-finals of the 2025 Suomen Cup. They achieved this stunning feat by triumphing over Veikkausliiga team Mariehamn with a score of 4-3 in a thrilling home match during the Sixth Round.

Klubi took an early lead with a goal from Hadi Noori, but Mariehamn responded before halftime with an equaliser from Arvid Lundberg.

However, an unfortunate own goal from Max Peterson, along with goals from Mustafa Ameen and Liam Rippon, gave the second-tier team a commanding lead against Mariehamn, who are currently positioned ninth in the Finnish top flight. Jayden Reid did manage to net two penalties for Mariehamn in injury time, but it wasn’t enough to change the outcome.

HJK have also progressed to the last eight but will likely not be popping the champagne after a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Mikkeli, one of four third-tier sides still in contention. David Ezeh scored the sole goal early in the second half to secure the win.

All the other Ykkonen teams faced elimination as well, with KPV Kokkola suffering a severe 7-0 defeat at the hands of SJK, where both Jeremiah Streng and Valentin Gasc found the net twice. Additionally, cup holders KuPS defeated Jazz Pori 6-2, with Agon Sadiku and Dion Krasniqi each contributing two goals.

Meanwhile, second-tier Ekenas managed a narrow 1-0 victory away at third-tier OLS Oulu, ensuring that two Ykkonen clubs will be featured in the Quarter-finals.

In the two all-Veikkausliiga matchups, Haka narrowly overcame Gnistan with a 3-2 win, while VPS held a 2-0 lead against Jaro. However, Filip Valencic came through for the hosts, scoring twice to level the game at 2-2 and force a penalty shootout, which Jaro clinched 5-4.

On Tuesday, PK-35 nearly caused an upset in their away match against AC Oulu, but the struggling side at the bottom of the Veikkausliiga secured their victory in a tense penalty shootout.
