Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt has praised Jake Gordon’s abilities but refrained from officially naming him as the Test captain for the upcoming series against the British and Irish Lions.
This week, an unexpected report from AAP suggested that Waratahs captain Gordon would take over from Harry Wilson as skipper for this significant series, despite the Reds No.8 performing admirably last season while NSW once again failed to qualify for the Super Rugby Pacific playoffs.
After working with 17 Wallabies contenders from the Force in Perth ahead of Australia’s opening Test against Fiji in Newcastle on July 6, Schmidt addressed the speculation surrounding Gordon’s promotion.

Last season, Gordon was Schmidt’s preferred choice as halfback.
“Jake is a significant leader within the team, but so too is Nic White. Additionally, Tate McDermott has previously captained,” Schmidt commented.
“Jake possesses an excellent skill set; he is a seasoned player with an impressive kicking game, notable passing accuracy, and he shows unwavering commitment when on the field.

“His capacity to cover the field and make crucial tackles showcases his versatility. At the heart of his skills lies his passing and kicking ability, which proved to be invaluable for us last season.”
Schmidt will announce his initial squad following the conclusion of the Brumbies’ campaign.
Stephen Larkham’s team is set to face the Chiefs in a semi-final match in Hamilton on Saturday.
In the meantime, the Lions are gearing up for their first encounter against Argentina in Dublin on June 21.
“They are capable of playing in various styles,” Schmidt remarked.
“They can play a physical game or move with precision and pace. Their players, like (England winger) Tommy Freeman and (Ireland fullback) Hugo Keenan, excel in aerial contests, so we’ll need to be on our game in that regard.”
“Our focus will be on working hard to thoroughly prepare for the challenges they present, and to ensure we can assert our own game when the opportunity arises.”
The Lions will kick off their Australian tour against the Force in Perth on June 28.
