Adam O’Brien’s post-match remarks following his team’s remarkable comeback victory over Manly have received support from former NRL captains Paul Gallen and Cameron Smith.
After the Knights found themselves trailing 16-0 against the Sea Eagles, they were booed off the field by their fans at half-time, only to stage a thrilling comeback and claim victory.
During the post-match press conference, O’Brien expressed that the booing was “disheartening” and suggested that those who booed “don’t understand rugby league.”Â
The following day, O’Brien issued an apology, stating he had been made aware of the fans’ reactions during the press conference and reacted out of protective instincts.
“I wholeheartedly apologise to our members and fans who may have been offended; I can see why they would be,” he explained.
On Nine’s 100% Footy, Gallen emphasised the importance of context in evaluating O’Brien’s comments, asserting that players are unlikely to take issue with the coach’s stance.
“To be honest, I don’t see much wrong with what he said. I understand Newcastle fans might be upset, and they’re entitled to express their feelings,” he stated.
“They pay their money to attend the game, and they have every right to boo. However, O’Brien was reacting to news of the booing for the first time during a press conference right after his team had mounted an impressive comeback and scored over 20 points in the second half to win.”Â

“I prefer to have my coach defend me rather than concede that the fans might be right and that we were terrible again.”Â
“I respect that he stood up for the team. I understand the frustration from the Newcastle fans, but they will forgive him if the team keeps winning.”Â

“What he did that night—standing up for his players—is commendable.”
Smith echoed this sentiment.
“There’s a sense of unity within the club and the team when the coach publicly supports his players,” the former Storm captain remarked.
“O’Brien addressed the fans who booed the team, suggesting they lack understanding of rugby league and the pressures the players face, as well as the efforts made in that first half.”Â
“I know Adam O’Brien well from his tenure as a coach at the Melbourne Storm. He is an emotional individual and a dedicated coach who genuinely cares for his players. He doesn’t like seeing them treated in such a manner, regardless of whether they warranted it.”Â
