Josh Schuster’s transition to the Rabbitohs has emerged as one of the more captivating stories of the year, yet the utility’s prospects within the sport remain somewhat uncertain.
At just 23 years of age, Schuster was previously regarded as one of the most promising young talents and seemed poised for a long-term role as five-eighth with the Sea Eagles.
However, following a series of fitness challenges and injuries, Schuster was let go by Manly and has now found a new opportunity with South Sydney, receiving a lifeline from coach Wayne Bennett.
Yet, whether this lifeline will develop into something more substantial is still up for debate, as Phil Gould expresses lingering concerns regarding the long-term viability of the Samoan international’s career in rugby league.

During a discussion on Wide World of Sports’ Six Tackles With Gus, rugby league analyst Phil Gould voiced his concerns regarding Schuster’s struggles off the field and whether pursuing a football career is ultimately beneficial for him.
“I genuinely hope he finds a positive path for his personal growth and well-being,” Gould noted.
“Josh has faced several challenges, and I’m unsure if his journey in football has been more of a help or a hindrance. He needs to determine if rugby league truly resonates with him and if it’s something he wishes to continue.
“Understanding Josh’s background makes this a complex question to grapple with.
“His natural talent is undeniable, but whether he genuinely requires football in his life is something only he can answer.
“If he’s in search of guidance, Wayne Bennett could be the ideal mentor for him.”

“I truly hope he gets back in shape, finds joy in rugby league, and develops a deep passion for the game, as this will be pivotal for his growth as a person moving forward.
“He’s not here to rescue the Rabbitohs; rather, the Rabbitohs are here to provide him with support.”
Schuster is not anticipated to be part of the first-grade squad at the season’s outset, but he remains a significant wildcard for the Rabbitohs if he can harness his vast potential.
He missed the club’s initial pre-season trial match and may/may not be included in the lineup for the upcoming Charity Shield against the Dragons this weekend.
