KNVB Beker champions Go Ahead Eagles are poised to part ways with manager Paul Simonis, who has purportedly reached an agreement to join Bundesliga outfit VfL Wolfsburg.
Simonis, appointed to succeed Rene Hake, made history last season by guiding Go Ahead Eagles to their first major trophy—the KNVB Beker—within his inaugural year at the helm.
As reported by the German publication Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung, Simonis has come to terms with Wolfsburg, a club in search of a new manager following the dismissal of Ralph Hasenhuttl.
Wolfsburg is said to be investing less than one million euros to secure the services of the promising young coach, who previously served as an assistant at both Go Ahead Eagles and sc Heerenveen, and had recently extended his contract with Go Ahead Eagles until summer 2027.
In a competitive selection process, Simonis outshone FC Copenhagen’s boss Jacob Neestrup—who was unable to leave his current role—after “fully convincing” director Peter Christiansen and making a “great impression” during their discussions.
Disappointment at Ajax
Following his stellar season with the Eagles, Simonis emerged as a front-runner for the Ajax position after the departure of Francesco Farioli. He saw himself as the prime candidate; however, the Amsterdam side ultimately appointed former Liverpool assistant John Heitinga, leaving Simonis reportedly “very disappointed.”
An official announcement is anticipated shortly.
