Davide Frattesi netted a dramatic winner in the 88th minute to secure a 2-1 victory for Inter Milan over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League (UCL) quarter-final clash, putting an end to Die Roten’s impressive 22-match unbeaten streak at home in this competition.
Despite facing an ever-expanding injury list, Bayern enjoyed a strong start, coming close to scoring when Michael Olise’s attempt drifted just wide during the initial stages. As Inter began to assert themselves, they found it difficult to penetrate Bayern’s resolute defence, leaving the best opportunities in the hands of the home side.
Olise was the standout for Bayern, and it was his assist from Jonas Urbig’s long ball that allowed Harry Kane to take aim and watch his shot agonisingly strike the outside of the far post.
Kane’s near miss went unanswered by Carlos Augusto, who shortly thereafter struck the side netting at the opposite end. Nonetheless, Inter persisted in their efforts to score against the run of play before the half-time whistle.

Augusto’s low cross unexpectedly found Marcus Thuram, who cleverly flicked it back for Lautaro Martínez, allowing him to elegantly slot the ball into the top corner with the outside of his boot.
Inter continued to push after the interval, creating a number of opportunities, including a shot from Martínez, which was pushed away by Urbig. Bayern attempted to slow the game and regain dominance, but chances remained scarce, apart from a well-struck volley from Raphaël Guerreiro that narrowly sailed over.
A frantic final 10 minutes saw Bayern come alive, bringing them level in dramatic fashion. Konrad Laimer controlled Joshua Kimmich’s cross and returned it across the face of the goal, where Thomas Müller, always the opportunist, lost his marker and tapped into the empty net.
Yet, in a moment of unexpected complacency after their equaliser, Bayern allowed Inter to snatch a stunning late winner. Nicolò Barella played in Augusto, who selflessly squared it for Frattesi to finish emphatically and silence the Allianz Arena.

This result significantly complicates Bayern’s hopes of reaching the final at this venue, particularly as they have never managed to win a UCL or European Cup knockout tie after conceding defeat in the first leg at home.
Conversely, Inter’s prospects appear bright as they are strong contenders for both the Serie A and Coppa Italia titles, and they could even aim for a treble if they can hold onto their advantage in the return leg.
