Karl Stefanovic found himself regretting a cheeky exchange with Rugby Australia chief Phil Waugh during an appearance on Tuesday morning.
Waugh was on Nine’s Today from Concord Oval to promote the new ‘Get into Rugby’ program, which serves as the official entry-level initiative for children aged 4-7.
However, Stefanovic stirred the pot by teasing the Wallabies legend, asserting that Waugh “did nothing” during their 2011 Sydney to Hobart sailing venture together.

“You’re a fantastic passenger, Karlos,” Waugh quipped in response.
“I didn’t even catch a glimpse of Karlos until we were making our way up the Derwent.”
Stefanovic was quick to admit his defeat in their banter.

“That certainly came back to bite me,” he acknowledged.
The two have a history, with Stefanovic confronting Waugh during a previous interview in 2023.
“Remember when we did the Sydney to Hobart in 2011?” Stefanovic recalled.
“You jumped in wearing a pair of budgie smugglers and exclaimed, ‘Let’s go!’ Is that the sort of behaviour you bring?”
Waugh burst into laughter and didn’t dispute the claim.
Australian stars Max Jorgensen and Faith Nathan were also present to support the ‘Get into Rugby’ initiative, aimed at developing essential movement skills among young girls and boys for their safe entrance into the sport.
“It’s an incredible program, just as I started when I was four at Narrabeen Tigers, offering a fantastic opportunity for kids to get involved in rugby,” Waugh remarked.
“This initiative for 4-7 year-olds allows them to learn important skills while having a great time, catering to both boys and girls.
“Where it’s executed well, the local rugby club can become the heart of the community, and it’s wonderful to see so many kids enjoying themselves on the field. Every registered participant will also receive a football.”
“Karlos, I’d love to see little Harper (Stefanovic’s daughter) here in one of these outfits, having a blast with a rugby ball.”
“She’s an absolute powerhouse,” Stefanovic concurred.
