Phil Gould is of the opinion that a fresh environment will do wonders for Brandon Smith as the off-contract star approaches a departure from the Sydney Roosters.
Furthermore, the Bulldogs coach has aimed criticism at his former club for what he describes as perplexing recruitment choices in recent seasons.
The 28-year-old was informed during the pre-season that his contract would not be renewed, with the Roosters opting to invest heavily in NSW Blues hooker Reece Robson instead.
Currently recovering from a long-term knee injury, Smith has caught the attention of South Sydney, who appear ready to secure the Kiwi international for the 2026 season, if not earlier.
In an interview on Wide World of Sports’ Six Tackles With Gus, the former Roosters head coach acknowledged that Smith’s personality seemed incompatible with the club, yet he firmly believes a new perspective could reignite the premiership winner’s career.

“I’ve never personally met Brandon Smith – my impression comes from his TV appearances,” Gould commented.
“I don’t believe he has any ill intentions; he simply seems like a fun-loving guy who plays good football. His personality has clashed somewhat with the Roosters, and the injury setback hasn’t helped matters.”
“I think whoever secures Brandon Smith next will get the best out of him. Having gone through the experience of transitioning from Melbourne to the Roosters and it not going as planned, I hope that gives him some grounding.”
“If he joins South Sydney under Wayne Bennett, that could be just what he needs.”

Smith’s challenging stint has raised significant questions about the Roosters’ recruitment and retention strategies, as the club now grapples with the implications of a major roster shake-up.
Terrell May and Sitili Tupouniua were both released from the club at the close of last season, and notable players such as Joseph Manu, Joseph Suaalii, Luke Keary, and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves have also moved on.
While not the sole factor at play, Gould believes Smith’s preference for playing hooker has influenced the team dynamics and overall composition of the Roosters.
“They brought him in as a hooker, but I don’t think that’s his best position,” the Bulldogs chief reflected.
“They released Sam Verrills, who I consider to be a solid hooker.
“What their intentions were when they signed Smith is unclear, especially as they already had [Victor] Radley in the mix. It makes you wonder how they could integrate them into the same squad.”

“A criticism I’ve had of the Roosters in recent times is that they’ve clung to some older players for too long and have not transitioned younger talent quickly enough.
“I’ve often wondered why they would re-sign Michael Jennings or pursue players like Chad Townsend or Dane Gagai. They’ve tried to maintain their successful streak for too long, which has cost them in the end.
“They have an abundance of talent coming through their ranks and need to place their faith in those players. They must be willing to lose with this talent, as it will ultimately help them win later on.”
The season has begun on an uncertain note for Trent Robinson’s side, enduring a hefty 50-14 defeat to the Broncos in the opening round, with a tough challenge against the Panthers looming this Friday.
