Jose Mourinho has proclaimed that Fenerbahce boasts more talent than Rangers, as he urged Ibrox’s interim manager Barry Ferguson to adopt a bolder strategy against his team in the Europa League last 16 second leg on Thursday.
The Turkish outfit is tasked with overcoming a 3-1 deficit from the first leg in Glasgow, following the culmination of their 18-match unbeaten run in Istanbul last week.
While conceding that Fenerbahce deserved to lose, Mourinho seized the opportunity to apply pressure on Rangers.
“I firmly believe Rangers are not superior to us,” stated the former Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester United coach on Wednesday.
“We have a genuine chance to advance. This isn’t about seeking revenge or demonstrating our superiority; it’s simply my honest opinion.
“But, I must admit, based on our previous performance, we did merit defeat.”
Mourinho sought to provoke Ferguson into an offensive mindset by suggesting that Rangers fans, who have witnessed their team suffer three consecutive losses at home, would reject a defensive display.
“I’m not certain if Ibrox, a legendary British venue like many across Scotland and England, will tolerate a highly defensive performance like the one they displayed against Fenerbahce,” remarked the Portuguese manager.
“That approach worked for them, yet it was undeniably defensive. I question whether the fans will accept that once more.
“We are ready for any style they choose. We can prepare for Rangers to employ a similar setup, playing deep and waiting for our error to capitalise.”
Ferguson, who stepped in as interim manager last month after Philippe Clement’s dismissal, has cautioned his players to expect a response inspired by Mourinho.
“Being on the touchline beside him last week was an honour,” said the former Rangers captain. “He has assembled a talented squad and is a world-class manager.
“I know he would have felt the sting of that loss deeply. Tomorrow night, you’ll witness a revitalised Fenerbahce, without a doubt.”
Rangers are aiming to avert a historic fourth consecutive defeat at Ibrox, yet Ferguson has encouraged his players to thrive in front of their home supporters.
“We must ignite the passion in the stands; that’s crucial,” he emphasised. “As a manager, I’m eagerly anticipating this. There’s an excitement that comes with this challenge.”
