Former Arsenal youth goalkeeper Ovie Ejeheri has shared insights into his decision to represent Nigeria internationally, despite eligibility to play for both England and Uganda.
Growing up in Greenwich, England, with a Nigerian father and a Ugandan mother, the young talent had the opportunity to choose from three nations.
Ultimately, he decided to dedicate his future to the Super Eagles, a choice he describes as profoundly personal and steeped in cultural heritage.
“I’m aware of my roots; I recognise my connections to all three nations and understand what it would signify for my mother’s and father’s families if I were to play for either Uganda or Nigeria,” he said.
“However, the final decision rests with me, and I am content with that.”
Ejeheri, known for his impressive height, agility, rapid reflexes, and commanding presence in the penalty area, joined Arsenal at just eight years old and rose through the ranks, reaching the U18 team in 2019.
In 2023, he departed the English Premier League side in search of more consistent first-team opportunities and is now making his mark with FC Midtjylland in Denmark’s top division.
Before his North London exit, he earned a place in England’s goalkeeper training camp due to his outstanding performances. Interestingly, he had fielded call-ups from both African nations at various points in his career.
“Yes, all three (countries) reached out to me. The invitation from England was for a goalkeeper camp around five years ago,” he recalled.
“It was a valuable experience, one I appreciated. Uganda and Nigeria have both expressed interest in me too.”
Nevertheless, Ejeheri is firm that his allegiance lies solely with the Nigerian national team and mentions the iconic goalkeepers he admires.
“Nigeria is definitely my priority. It’s the team I’ve always aspired to represent,” he stated.
“There were instances when my dad would say I should play for Nigeria, but ultimately, he couldn’t impose that on me. I know without a doubt that I want to don the Super Eagles jersey.”
“In terms of goalkeepers I look up to, I’d say (Vincent) Enyeama, as he’s someone I’ve personally observed. My dad often speaks of Peter Rufai, and he’s another player I respect greatly.”
While Stanley Nwabali currently holds the position of first-choice goalkeeper for Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles, the 22-year-old is optimistic that his time will come. “I’m thrilled about the future. I’m confident it’s only a matter of time.
“As long as I showcase my abilities at the club level, there’s every reason to believe I’ll get my chance to play for Nigeria.”
Per Mertesacker, the former Germany international and Arsenal Academy Manager, praised Ejeheri during his tenure at the Emirates Stadium, highlighting his potential and talent.
“He must navigate his learning journey, which will involve hard work, learning from mistakes, and continuously striving for his aspirations,” Mertesacker stated, as reported by Utmostt Sports Management.
“He’ll need to experience these challenges to find success in football. If not, he’s a humble individual with a multitude of skills who will find his place to shine elsewhere!
“This is why we, at Arsenal, holistically support our young players to become ‘strong young gunners’, helping them carve their paths and acquire the skills necessary for success and happiness both on and off the pitch.
“Ovie has been part of our setup for a decade already, progressing through our academy ranks with commitment and enthusiasm. He gives his utmost each day,” he continued.
“His journey has had its ups and downs – many commendable performances complemented by some injuries that sidelined him for periods. He evolved through these challenges with a dedicated support network and a team of passionate academy staff who genuinely cared for him, and he emerges stronger now from it.
“Ovie is a determined competitor who puts in the hard work. He will forge his own pathway to achieve his best.”
As Nigeria looks forward to upcoming tournaments, Ejeheri’s commitment offers critical depth to an essential position. With fierce competition for the No. 1 jersey, his decision underscores the increasing appeal of the Super Eagles among talents in the diaspora.
Now concentrating on his club career while aspiring for an international debut, all eyes are on the lanky shot-stopper as his journey in the green and white begins to unfold.
