Rangers have named former Southampton manager Russell Martin as their new head coach, signing him on a three-year contract, the Scottish Premiership club announced on Thursday.
Martin, who has represented Scotland 29 times and featured for Rangers on loan in the 2017/18 season, returns to a managerial role following his dismissal from Premier League side Southampton last December.
The 39-year-old took over Southampton in 2023, achieving promotion through the playoffs in his inaugural season, with praise for his team’s entertaining brand of football.
However, the side faced a harsh reality in the Premier League, suffering 13 losses in their first 16 matches, which ultimately led to the earliest relegation in the league’s history, with seven fixtures still remaining.
“My time here gave me a glimpse of what makes this club so unique – the expectation, the passion, and its rich history,” Martin, who has also held roles at Swansea City and MK Dons, stated.
“Now that I’m back, I am wholeheartedly committed to restoring success for our supporters, our players, and everyone involved with the club.
“While there is much work ahead of us, our objective is crystal clear: win matches, lift trophies, and provide Rangers fans with a team they can truly take pride in. We aim to play boldly, seize possession, and rise to the occasion in critical moments.”
Rangers, who were acquired by an American investment group led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises in May, finished as runners-up to their rivals Celtic for the fourth consecutive season, having last claimed the league title in the 2020/21 campaign.
The club will begin their Champions League qualifying journey in the second round.
