The manager of the Dutch national team, Ronald Koeman, has summoned Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Mats Wieffer and Ajax defender Youri Baas for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Spain, following the withdrawal of Inter right-back Denzel Dumfries due to injury.
Wieffer, who has represented the national team 12 times, has seen limited action at Brighton since his transfer from Feyenoord in the summer, largely because a thigh injury sidelined him for almost two months.
On the other hand, 22-year-old Youri Baas will make his debut with the senior squad after previously being called to the U21 team. Baas, who celebrates his birthday on Monday, unexpectedly found himself in Francesco Farioli’s starting lineup at the beginning of the current season and has since become a crucial part of a rejuvenated Ajax team.
This inclusion of Wieffer and Baas was essential for Koeman after Denzel Dumfries had to pull out due to a muscle injury he picked up during Sunday’s clash with Atalanta.
Additionally, Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is facing his own issues, having missed Sunday’s LaLiga encounter against Atletico Madrid due to illness. As per the Dutch KNVB, the 55-time international will make his way to Zeist but will not participate in training.
The Netherlands is set to clash with Spain in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Nations League. The first leg will take place in Rotterdam this Thursday, followed by the second leg in Valencia this Sunday.
