Italy’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma has made it clear that there are no justifications for his team’s disappointing 3-0 loss against Norway in the World Cup qualifiers on Friday, asserting that their current form is simply not good enough and that fans deserve far better.
In their qualifying campaign opener, Italy were taken aback by Norway’s clinical display in the first half, with goals from Alexander Sorloth, Antonio Nusa, and Erling Haaland putting the visitors firmly on the back foot.
As it stands, Italy find themselves in fourth place in Group I, while Norway tops the group with nine points from three matches. Estonia, Moldova, and Israel are also competing in this group.
“I can’t explain it right now. We need to look deep within ourselves and understand the performance we delivered tonight. Our fans deserve much more than this,” Donnarumma stated during an interview with Italian TV channel Rai Sport.
“We all need to come together after games like these and reflect on our individual roles.”

The four-time World Cup champions have not participated in the global tournament since 2014.
Italy’s head coach, Luciano Spalletti, acknowledged that the team is enduring a challenging period and confirmed he would be addressing the situation with the Italian Football Federation.
“It has to come from us; we are Italy, and performances like this are unacceptable. We need to bond together more than ever,” Donnarumma added. Notably, he recently secured the Champions League, Ligue 1, French Cup, and French Super Cup titles with Paris St Germain in the last season.
Italy will next take on fifth-placed Moldova at home on Monday.
