Spain is set to unleash their attacking flair as they take on the Netherlands in the first leg of their Nations League quarter-final on Thursday. This clash could easily be mistaken for a European Championship final, according to head coach Luis de la Fuente.
Spain finished atop Nations League A Group Four with an impressive 16 points, achieving five victories and one draw. Meanwhile, the Netherlands secured second place in Group Three, trailing Germany by five points.
“Our aim is to get the best out of our players, and they thrive on attacking play with plenty of ball control,” De la Fuente stated during a press conference on Wednesday.
“While it’s not a guaranteed formula for success—after all, strategies can evolve—our players are keen on that particular style of play.”
“I believe that a coach’s main virtue lies in maximising the potential of his players. Therefore, we strive to respond to their desires.”
The reigning European Champions, Spain, are keen to become the first team to defend their Nations League title after winning it in 2023. They hope to establish an advantage in the Netherlands before hosting the return leg.
“Our objective is always to win,” De la Fuente emphasised. “So, we’ll focus on performing our role effectively against a formidable opponent.”
“This is going to be a challenging match, tough and intense, as they have outstanding players who compete at the highest levels in Europe.”
“Tomorrow’s match could very well resemble a European Championship final.”
Spain will be without forward Ferran Torres for this encounter.
“Ferran has encountered an issue; he picked up a knock during Barcelona’s last match,” the coach explained.
“Player well-being is our priority. Since he has been unable to train normally, we felt it was best for him to rest and recover fully.”
“Though he could potentially play, we won’t take any chances, and we’re hopeful he will be in top shape by Sunday for the second leg.”
