Cristiano Ronaldo has declared that he will not participate in the forthcoming Club World Cup, quashing speculations about a potential transfer to one of the competing teams.
Addressing the media ahead of Sunday’s Nations League final against Spain in Munich, the Portugal captain stated that the claims regarding his involvement in the newly expanded tournament were inaccurate.
“I will not be at the Club World Cup,” the veteran said, although he noted that he had “received inquiries” from various teams involved in the event.
Ronaldo arrived at the Nations League in Germany amidst ongoing uncertainty about his club career, as his contract with Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr is set to lapse at the end of June.
In May, the Portuguese star took to social media to declare “the chapter is over,” as speculation grew about a possible move to another club, notably Al Hilal, which will compete in the tournament in the United States this June.
Ronaldo indicated he was not inclined to make a hasty decision that would enable him to play in the competition.
“Some teams reached out to me. Some made sense, while others did not, but you can’t do everything; you can’t catch every ball.”
The forward stated that the decision regarding his future was “almost final.”
