Ricardo Gareca has officially announced his resignation as head coach of Chile, following their disappointing 2-0 loss to Bolivia on Tuesday, which dashed their hopes of qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
“We made a decision collectively, with the coaching staff and the entire delegation. We felt it was important to alleviate the situation,” Gareca stated during a short press conference post-match in El Alto, where he did not entertain questions from the media.
“The results just didn’t come our way at any point. We were unable to achieve the results we needed. Chile finds itself in a situation that no one would desire.”
This latest defeat has left Chile languishing at the bottom of the South American qualifying table, with only 10 points and just two matches remaining in the qualification phase.

‘La Roja’ will be absent from the World Cup for a third consecutive time, having failed to qualify for the 2018 tournament in Russia and Qatar 2022, following a golden period in which they claimed the Copa America title in both 2015 and 2016.
During Gareca’s tenure, which began in 2024, Chile only managed to secure a single victory out of 13 competitive matches.
