Derek Rucker is of the opinion that Australian guard Patty Mills could have a “genuine impact” in the NBL should he decide to return to Australia to conclude his professional basketball journey.
The 36-year-old has spent the last two seasons primarily as a bench player, moving between teams before finally signing with the Los Angeles Clippers.
However, with no contract in place beyond the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, speculation surrounding Mills’ potential return to Australia is heating up.
Mills last played for the Melbourne Tigers during the 2011-12 season, and his skill set would be a considerable asset for any team fortunate enough to secure his signature.

Rucker, who claimed the MVP title during his own tenure in the Australian league, hasn’t dismissed the possibility of Mills making a return.
“That final dance could be rather costly for some clubs,” he remarked in an interview with NBL Now.
“Yet, we’ve witnessed surprises in the past that we never thought would materialise.
“Would Patty be an excellent acquisition for a club? Absolutely, for a multitude of reasons. However, there comes a point where performance may start to decline.”
“I can’t predict his future in the NBA; that will unfold as time goes on. Nevertheless, I can see him having a meaningful impact with several teams.”
“There are various locations where a move could significantly enhance the commercial and marketing prospects of a program.”
Players like Andrew Bogut and Matthew Dellavedova are among the legends who opted to return to the NBL to wrap up their careers.

Another Boomers teammate, Joe Ingles, has also been mentioned as a candidate to complete his career on Australian soil. However, Rucker believes that Ingles would be better suited to an off-court position.
“Joe would be an excellent addition in a non-playing role,” he stated.
“Having him in your front office would be beneficial. He would learn the ins and outs of management while leveraging his extensive network and contacts to your advantage.
“This is akin to the contributions made by Andrew Bogut and Luc Longley for the Sydney Kings.
“His presence would infuse your program with a wealth of contacts and networks, bringing instant credibility and respect.”
