Bayern Munich’s midfielder Jamal Musiala is set for a “prolonged absence” following a broken fibula and ankle dislocation sustained during the Club World Cup, as confirmed by the German champions on Sunday.
The 22-year-old German international was injured in a challenge involving Paris Saint-Germain’s goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma during Bayern’s 2-0 defeat in the quarter-finals held in Atlanta on Saturday.
Coach Vincent Kompany expressed his frustration regarding the injury but labelled it an “accident”. However, Bayern’s goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was critical of Donnarumma, describing his actions as “reckless”.
Musiala was en route back to Munich on Sunday morning and will soon undergo surgery, according to a club statement.
“This significant injury and the anticipated extended recovery time are a considerable blow for Jamal and all of us. It is a tough moment for FC Bayern,” remarked sporting director Max Eberl.
“Everyone understands just how vital Jamal is to our gameplay and the pivotal role he plays within our squad.
“Moreover, this has a substantial personal impact and we all empathise with him: Jamal has only just returned from a previous injury and now faces another lengthy period away. He will receive all the support he requires from us.
“We will be by his side, providing intensive support, and we can’t wait for the day he is back on the field.”
Reports from German media suggest that Musiala could be sidelined for four to five months, with a potential return just before the year ends.
“It’s a situation where there’s no reason to engage like that; it’s reckless,” Neuer commented after the match. “He takes the risk of injuring his opponent into account.”
