Thomas Muller, the seasoned forward for Bayern Munich, is eager to ‘prove himself’ once more at the Club World Cup as his team travels to the United States in pursuit of additional silverware to complete their season.
Bayern and Muller are coming off a profitable domestic season, having been crowned Bundesliga champions during Vincent Kompany’s inaugural campaign at the helm.
Now, as they set off for the U.S., the goal is to finish on a triumphant note. For Muller, the Club World Cup is a thrilling tournament, especially with the upcoming World Cup in 2026 on the horizon.
Muller stated, “First and foremost, the lure of this being a global tournament is strong. In this format, it resembles a World Cup a bit more. Previously, the Club World Cup only featured a limited number of past champions.”
“We need to familiarise ourselves with the tournament, but having it in a nation set to host the World Cup the following year is obviously very exciting for us.”

Though ticket sales have been slower than expected for the tournament, Muller is confident that fans will come out to support the top European teams.
He said: “With this Club World Cup and these players and cities, particularly the European clubs, which boast fans worldwide—not just Bayern but also other elite teams like Real Madrid, the top English clubs—fans will have the chance to witness these players in their region.”
“I believe we will experience a level of excitement that we don’t normally see here, where things run smoothly as usual.”
Vincent Kompany, Muller’s manager, recently expressed his enthusiasm about facing off against Argentine club Boca Juniors, a sentiment echoed by Muller.
He added: “Playing against Boca Juniors would be a highlight. I’m very passionate about football, and I keep up with a lot of what’s happening lately in the Argentine league on TV, the internet, and social media. An ex-team-mate of mine, Micho (Martin Demichelis), managed River Plate, and their matches against Boca Juniors are massive.”
“When these historic clubs from football-loving countries compete, whether in Brazil or Argentina, it’s genuinely special.”
For Muller, despite his lengthy and distinguished tenure with Bayern, the Club World Cup offers another platform to showcase his abilities, which is significant as he approaches the end of his contract after the tournament.
“We’re looking forward to embracing different cultures, with various clubs converging, and naturally, we aim to advance to the knockout stages. The fervour for the game and the desire to win—that competitiveness—has always been the foundation. You can’t really learn that; you either possess it or you don’t.
“For me, it’s about continually proving myself, competing internally within the team, which is no easy feat considering the players we have here. Externally, as a club, it’s about facing challenges repeatedly, both physically and in competitions, and emerging victorious.
“That’s the thrill; it’s not solely about the trophy—the trophy is merely a piece of metal received after winning the competition. What truly brings joy is the journey toward that achievement, and that’s what excites me.”
