Bayer Leverkusen Braces for Potential Exits of Florian Wirtz and Xabi Alonso

Florian Wirtz, Bayer Leverkusen’s talented attacking midfielder, and head coach Xabi Alonso are among the prominent names expected to depart the club at the end of the season.

After an unbeaten run last season, where they clinched both the domestic league and Cup titles, Leverkusen is poised to finish second in the current campaign, with Bayern Munich already having sealed the championship with an eight-point advantage and only two matches remaining.

Discussions among club officials indicate that they are bracing for the likely exit of several vital players, including Wirtz, Alonso, defender Jonathan Tah, and striker Patrik Schick, as reported by various media outlets and insiders.

Wirtz, just 22, is anticipated to make a move to league rivals Bayern, which is viewed as his most probable destination this summer.

The German international has enjoyed a stellar season, netting 10 league goals and providing another 10 assists, making him a long-standing target for the German giants.

His contract runs until 2027, and should he transfer, Leverkusen could demand a fee exceeding €100 million ($114 million), with reports suggesting that Wirtz would prefer a switch to Bayern if he leaves.

While Wirtz’s future remains uncertain, it appears almost inevitable that Alonso will also part ways with the club, having consistently refrained from confirming another season in Germany.

He has indicated that discussions about his future will take place with club management soon.

Should current Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti depart, a move to the Spanish giants is thought to be a distinct possibility for Alonso.

Meanwhile, defensive stalwart Tah, who has dedicated a decade to Leverkusen, is also expected to exit as his contract approaches its conclusion.

Last year, he nearly made a move to Bayern, a transfer that fell through at the last moment.

Adding to the list of potential departures is Leverkusen’s leading scorer this season, Czech striker Schick, who has emerged as a target for Bayern as a secondary attacking option behind Bundesliga top scorer Harry Kane.

This season, Schick has found the back of the net 19 times in the Bundesliga, five goals shy of Kane.
