Australian media outlets have heavily criticised Tottenham’s choice to dismiss fan-favourite Ange Postecoglou, labelling it a “significant mistake” and highlighting his consistent track record as a winner.
Postecoglou, one of Australia’s most notable managerial exports, guided Spurs to their first European trophy in 41 years and secured a spot in next season’s Champions League.
However, his tenure also coincided with the club’s most disappointing domestic season since their relegation in 1976-77, which ultimately led to his exit.
The Sydney Morning Herald condemned chairman Daniel Levy’s decision as “cold-hearted“, suggesting that the club “will undoubtedly regret it, regardless of the success of his successor.”
“There will now always be an unanswered ‘what if’ regarding the potential of a third season for Postecoglou at Spurs,” they remarked.
“It seems that whoever replaces him will face significant difficulties in meeting Levy’s expectations, which seem to prioritise a higher Premier League standing over the actual pursuit of silverware.“
In a piece for The Australian, former Socceroo and West Ham legend Robbie Slater described Postecoglou’s termination as “a significant mistake“.
“Levy has placed himself in an exceptionally tricky position now. He’s already unpopular with Spurs fans, and this move is a considerable gamble,” Slater commented.
“Ange had promised that ‘season three is always better than season two.’ Best of luck with that, Spurs.“
Postecoglou, who previously managed Australia and Celtic, became the fifth manager to be dismissed by Levy in just six years.
Meanwhile, the Australian national broadcaster ABC adopted a more subdued tone in its critique, acknowledging that “in the harsh light of reality, Postecoglou was always going to struggle to retain his position“.
However, they too questioned the rationale behind letting go of a manager who fulfilled his promise by clinching a trophy in his second year.
“He has proven his ability to win across every league where he has held a prolonged managerial role, whether in Scotland, Australia, Japan, or now England,” they stated.
“Parting ways with Postecoglou aligns with Tottenham’s recent trajectory of squandering promising opportunities and creating an uncomfortable – if not torturous – environment for its supporters.“
