Manager Carlo Ancelotti lavished praise on his emerging talents after a resilient Real Madrid fought back to secure a 2-1 victory over Mallorca, with academy centre-back Jacobo Ramon scoring a dramatic winner deep into stoppage time.
This triumph has postponed Barcelona’s celebrations for the LaLiga title and kept Real Madrid’s slim hopes alive. However, with two matches left to play, they find themselves four points adrift of leaders Barcelona, who also have a game in hand and could clinch their 28th league title this Thursday if they overcome local rivals Espanyol.
“We refused to surrender despite having 12 players sidelined, which is quite unusual,” Ancelotti remarked during the post-match press conference.
“The victory was a result of the team’s commendable attitude, with those who stepped in delivering impressive performances. I’ve never witnessed a team attempt 40 shots on goal as we did today.
“We’ve managed to cover so many absences through the remarkable dedication from all players who took to the field today. If we had approached more matches with this mindset throughout the season, our campaign would have been significantly better.”
On Monday, Ancelotti confirmed that he would be departing Real Madrid at the end of the season to take over the vacant managerial position with the Brazil national team.
Nonetheless, the Italian insisted that his focus remains firmly on his current role in Madrid until May 26, when he is set to head to Rio de Janeiro to commence his new position with the five-time World Cup winners.
“Every time I’ve sat on the bench at the Santiago Bernabeu, it has held special significance for me,” Ancelotti stated.
“I depart with the confidence and satisfaction of knowing I’ve done everything in my power, ensuring my team competes until the very last minute, as we did today.
“We intend to focus on winning the remaining matches and see where that takes us. They must falter, but anything is possible. We will keep fighting.”
