As reported by ESPN, Ajax and their manager Francesco Farioli appear to be on the brink of separation, with growing tensions between the Italian coach and the club’s executive board.
Ajax’s campaign ended in disappointment as they allowed a 9-point lead to slip away during the final stages of the Eredivisie, ultimately missing out on the title. Following their 2-0 victory against FC Twente in the season finale, an emotional Farioli was seen tearing up as the Ajax supporters rallied behind their team.
In the aftermath of the match and Farioli’s post-game comments, ESPN indicated that a startling split between Farioli and Ajax seems imminent. Tensions are reportedly escalating between the manager and the club’s executive team, which includes technical director Alex Kroes, general manager Menno Geelen, and director of football Marijn Beuker.

When questioned about his future with Ajax, Farioli spoke in generalities, stating, “The future of Ajax is what truly matters.” He remained non-committal about his own position, adding, “I prefer to turn a new leaf and focus on what lies ahead, but after such an emotional day filled with various feelings, I won’t think about my future until tomorrow morning. I have no doubts regarding Ajax’s future.”
Surprising split on the horizon
ESPN has revealed that Farioli and Kroes are at odds over several key matters, which include transfer strategies, tactical approaches, contract renewals, and the club’s financial standing.
“The Ajax manager and the executive board disagree on almost every technical issue,” according to ESPN. “Kroes has urged Farioli to adopt a more attacking style of play next season, but the coach feels this demand is quite unrealistic. He has been informed that only a limited portion of transfer earnings and Champions League revenues can be reinvested this summer.
“Farioli is concerned that with restricted resources and a scouting department ignoring his requests, the squad’s quality next season may fall below the standard he has had this year at Ajax. Recently, full-backs, a controlling midfielder, and a striker that Farioli identified have been deemed unsuitable by the scouting department yet again.”
Additionally, Farioli wants Ajax to renew the contracts of vice-captain Davy Klaassen and goalkeeper Remko Pasveer, both of whom have featured in a total of 78 matches this season. However, the board has yet to comply with this request, although they have expressed intentions to reinstate club legend Dusan Tadic—a player that Farioli reportedly does not wish to include in his plans.
“While Farioli acknowledges Tadic’s beloved status in Amsterdam, he has conveyed to Kroes that he is not interested in Tadic’s return. Within his high-intensity playing style, he sees no practical value in having Tadic. Farioli is frustrated that Ajax continues to negotiate with Tadic, who desires to come back.”
Moreover, earlier evaluations of Farioli and the board’s collaboration did not go smoothly, suggesting that the foundation for effective cooperation may have eroded, as noted by ESPN. Another evaluation is set for next week.
