Former A-Leagues star Alex Brosque believes that Noah Botic, the current Golden Boot leader, might be the solution to a persistent issue for the Subway Socceroos.
As Tony Popovic’s side gears up to face Indonesia and China in the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup qualifiers, the Green and Gold find themselves in second place – nine points adrift of Japan, but only a point clear of Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and China as they pursue qualification for next year’s tournament.
There is an increasing chorus calling for Western United’s Botic to receive his first international call-up this season as he enjoys his best performance yet, especially considering that Australia has netted just six goals in the six qualification fixtures played thus far.
With an impressive tally of 10 goals, the 23-year-old has thrust himself firmly into contention for selection. On this week’s episode of Total A-Leagues, Brosque, a former Sydney FC striker and Socceroo, joined Sydney Morning Herald journalist and host Vince Rugari to discuss the potential advantages of including Botic in the squad.

“Given his current form, he’s been scoring consistently,” Brosque stated. “He’s netted seven goals in his last eight matches, and it’s his movement in the box during various situations that stands out.
“He possesses a fantastic strike and has shown he can score from distance. He makes intelligent runs and finds space between defenders when provided with quality service.
“With players like Craig Goodwin potentially delivering from the left, Botic thrives on those types of balls. If he makes the right runs, the service will come.
“This is precisely what we are missing at the moment. While (Mitchell) Duke and (Kusini) Yengi provide plenty of hard work and physicality, Botic is a natural goalscorer – a type we haven’t seen for a considerable time.
“We’re in search of someone who can put the ball in the net. This has been a recurring topic in discussions leading up to every camp over the past couple of years. Who will score the goals? Who is our go-to goalscorer when we need someone to deliver in critical moments?
“Yes, he’s youthful, but he has demonstrated that he is prepared for that leap, whether Popa decides to utilise him at this crucial stage. Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing (Mathew) Leckie play as a striker, as he can add a lot of quality with skilled wingers around him.
“I believe Irankunda should definitely be back in the starting lineup. He is in great form and can bring significant confidence to the camp right now. I think either of these two should be starting.”
