Kerri Johnson, a winger for the Brisbane Broncos, marked her NRLW debut in style by scoring two tries as the team launched its season with a commanding 28-4 victory over the Wests Tigers on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers’ winger Caitlin Turnbull also made a memorable entrance, scoring her first try in the 24th minute to equalise the match. However, the Broncos quickly bounced back, securing five consecutive tries to clinch a decisive win in Brisbane.
Queensland State of Origin sensation Tamika Upton was instrumental in Johnson’s first try, executing a brilliant line break from deep in Brisbane’s territory.
Upton expertly navigated through the Tigers’ defence with a clever dummy, a left-side fend, and an explosive burst of speed before drawing in her opponent and setting up Johnson, who charged through to score.
Millie Elliott, Upton’s former teammate from the Knights, remarked on the Nine broadcast, “She must have just picked that up when she joined Brisbane.”

“She’s got the skinniest arms you’ll ever see,” commented one analyst. “To assist Kerri Johnson at this level on her debut is just incredible.”
With only eight minutes left in the game and Brisbane ahead 18-4, powerhouse centre Mele Hufanga bulldozed her way over the try line following a cheeky chip from Jada Ferguson, sealing the match.
Before that, however, Hufanga faced two monumental challenges during the second half, both thwarted by exceptional goal-line defence.
The first instance saw Losana Lutu and Kezie Apps superbly hold her up on Brisbane’s left flank.
Shortly afterward, Turnbull and Evie McGrath united to thwart Hufanga’s ferocious assault nearer the posts.
The latter defensive stand was particularly remarkable.
“No way!” exclaimed former NRLW superstar Allana Ferguson during the Nine broadcast. “How? Tamika Upton hit another gear, and Mele Hufanga was going full throttle.”
Rugby league legend Ruan Sims added, “Mele Hufanga was completely certain to score, yet they swarmed her and managed to turn her over.”
Ferguson further noted, “Not many players can achieve this against Mele Hufanga. It’s all about making that initial contact correctly. Look at her go! That’s massive, massive defence.”
The Tigers and Bulldogs will kick off round two in Campbelltown on Thursday night, while the Broncos are set to clash with the Titans on the Gold Coast next Sunday afternoon.
