Germany’s head coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed that his team is still working to bridge the gap with the world’s elite following their 2-0 defeat to France in the Nations League on Sunday. Nonetheless, he remains optimistic about the team’s potential for success.
With Kylian Mbappe and Michael Olise scoring the goals that secured victory for France, they claimed third place in the Nations League. Nagelsmann noted visible improvement in his team compared to their previous 2-1 semi-final loss to Portugal on Wednesday.
“If we continue performing like we did today and avoid regressing against the teams in the World Cup qualifiers, then I’m hopeful we can advance confidently and prepare effectively,” he shared with the media.
“Naturally, we still need to make a few improvements to reach the level we aspire to, lagging slightly behind the world’s best. We cannot rectify everything that has gone awry over the years within just one or two seasons.”
“Nevertheless, I feel a remarkable energy within the entire squad, including both players and staff. There’s a unique quality present and a great deal of untapped potential.”
Germany last lifted the World Cup trophy in 2014 and has faced early exits in the group stage of the tournament in the past two editions. They are placed in Group A of Europe’s qualifying for the 2026 tournament in North America.
Their qualification journey kicks off in September against Slovakia in Bratislava.
