Portugal’s captain Cristiano Ronaldo was overwhelmed with emotion as his team clinched their second Nations League title on Sunday, expressing that securing victories with his national side surpasses any achievements with club football.
Ronaldo scored his 138th international goal in the second half, helping to send the final against Spain to penalties after both sides ended the match level at 2-2. The 40-year-old forward, who was substituted, watched from the sidelines as Portugal successfully converted all five penalties to secure the championship.
This victory, which brought the five-time Champions League winner to tears, marks Ronaldo’s third triumph on the international stage, adding to his victories in the 2016 European Championship and the inaugural Nations League in 2019.
“What a joy,” Ronaldo shared with Sport TV. “Above all, this is for our generation, which truly deserved a title of such significance—for our families. My children were here, along with my wife, my brother, and my friends.”
“Winning for Portugal is always something special. I’ve achieved many titles with clubs, but nothing compares to winning for my country. It brings tears of joy, reflecting a duty fulfilled.”
“Talking about Portugal always stirs special emotions. Being the captain of this generation is an immense source of pride. Winning a title with the national team is the ultimate achievement.”
As for Ronaldo’s future, it remains uncertain. He stated last week that he does not intend to participate in the Club World Cup in the United States, commencing later this month, despite interest from clubs involved in the 32-team tournament.
The Al-Nassr forward revealed that he has received multiple offers from other teams for a stint in the U.S., while his club’s sporting director, Fernando Hierro, mentioned last month that they are discussing a contract extension with Ronaldo but are facing competition from clubs eager to acquire the five-time Ballon d’Or recipient.
For the time being, however, Ronaldo is concentrating on celebrating his recent success, having played through injury in the finals.
“It’s magnificent,” he remarked. “This victory belongs to our nation. We may be a small country, but our ambitions are grand.”
“The future is all about the short term. Now is the moment to rest thoroughly. I played despite my injury, giving my all because that’s what you do for your national team.”
