Jobe Bellingham, the England U21 midfielder, has reached a deal to leave Sunderland and join Borussia Dortmund, with reports indicating the transfer could be worth around £31 million, including add-ons.
The star from Bedlington has signed a five-year contract with the German outfit following Sunderland’s elevation to the Premier League.
Dortmund has reportedly settled on a fixed fee close to €33 million, along with up to €5 million in performance-related bonuses for the 19-year-old.
Additionally, Sunderland has secured a 15 per cent clause for any future sale.
If the deal maximises its potential, it will mark Sunderland’s largest outgoing transfer, surpassing the £30 million move of Jordan Pickford to Everton back in 2017.
This transfer would also position Bellingham as Dortmund’s most expensive signing to date, overtaking their 2016 purchase of Ousmane Dembele.
Joining Sunderland in 2023 for an initial £1.5 million from Birmingham City, Bellingham quickly established himself as a crucial player in the Black Cats’ midfield, notching 11 goals and four assists across 90 appearances, while playing a key role in their playoff promotion.
His impressive performances in the Championship saw him included in the league’s Team of the Season and earn the Young Player of the Year award for 2024/25.
Following in Jude’s Footsteps
Jobe is following the path of his older brother, Jude Bellingham, who made a name for himself at Dortmund before securing a £115 million transfer to Real Madrid.
This move mirrors Jude’s journey, providing Jobe with a platform known for cultivating young talent.
Despite interest from Eintracht Frankfurt, RB Leipzig, and multiple Premier League clubs, Bellingham chose Dortmund, aligning himself with a club that reflects his family’s values and preferences.
For Borussia Dortmund, time is of the essence as they aim to register Bellingham in time to include him in their FIFA Club World Cup squad, ahead of the tournament kicking off in mid-June.
