PSV’s skipper Luuk de Jong described the title win as ‘bizarre’ following an incredible comeback from a significant points deficit in the closing weeks of the season.
With only five matches remaining, Ajax lost a commanding 9-point lead after managing to secure just one victory in that stretch. “It’s a strange championship. We had almost lost hope,” De Jong shared with ESPN after their title-securing 3-1 triumph over Sparta Rotterdam.
“I had mentioned in previous interviews that we would always regret not claiming the championship.”
De Jong made a crucial contribution in Sunday’s match, netting the second goal just six minutes in, shortly after Gjivai Zechiel had equalised for Sparta. “It did get a bit tense for a spell, didn’t it? The first half went fine, but once they scored to make it 1-1, you start to think, ‘Is this really going to be our day?'”
“We performed well, but you still need to find the back of the net. Once it was 1-3, you could tell it was secured.”
Having scored his 14th goal of the Eredivisie season, De Jong is now the team’s leading scorer, but he is uncertain about whether he will still be in a PSV jersey next season. His contract expires at the end of this summer, with discussions about an extension still pending. “We need to have a conversation with the club, but first, let’s celebrate properly.”
