Noted AFL journalist Caroline Wilson has suggested that Bailey Smith’s off-field behaviour is causing some discontent among his teammates at Geelong.
This statement follows a private discussion last week between AFL chief Andrew Dillon and Smith, along with the Cats’ management.
The 24-year-old received a public reprimand from Dillon regarding an Instagram post that alluded to the use of illegal substances, yet he did not face any formal penalties.

While discussing the reasons behind Dillon’s hour-long trip to converse with Smith, Wilson highlighted a number of influencing factors.
“There’s genuine concern regarding Bailey Smith and some of his actions,” Wilson stated on Wide World of Sports’ 3AW program on Saturday.
“Dillon shares a connection with the Smith family; being a Xavier College alum like Bailey, he likely knows Smith’s father from their school days, and I believe Steve Hocking suggested that a meeting might be beneficial.”
“It was notably interesting that Geelong’s football chief Andrew Mackie attended as well.”
“Some players at Geelong appreciate what Bailey Smith brings to the club, but they aren’t fond of all his off-field behaviour, and I’m not only referring to that unfortunate social media post.”
“They were aware of his personality when he joined, however, it’s one thing to think you know what to expect, and another to truly witness it. At times, he hasn’t been as dependable as they hoped.”
“He often seems to miss the mark when it comes to learning from his mistakes, and it’s possible that this prompted the meeting.”
“I admire Andrew Dillon for not insisting that Smith travel to Melbourne. There’s a belief among the Cats that telling Bailey Smith ‘it’s incredibly foolish to link celebrating a premiership to cocaine’ wouldn’t be effective.”
“There are countless teenagers who follow him on social media, and even if he was goaded by someone, that sends a very poor message.”
“However, it isn’t as simple as just telling him that directly. It’s about approaching the conversation delicately. Dillon likely explained to Bailey Smith the potential he has if he commits to doing right by his team, his teammates, and his own performance.”
Smith was ruled out late from Geelong’s match against Gold Coast, with the club citing hamstring soreness as the reason.
